The match between Queens Park Rangers and Hull City took place on 16 August 2014 and was be the first match of the 2014-15 season for both clubs. The match took place at QPR's Loftus Road stadium.

The match marked QPR's return to the Premier League after being promoted following the victory in the Championship play-off final over Derby County.

QPR lined up in a 5-3-2 formation, employing the three-centre-back tactic that had been used successfully at the World Cup and in pre-season. Robert Green held his starting place. The back three comprised of Rio Ferdinand, Steven Caulker and Richard Dunne; Danny Simpson (on the right) and Armand Traoré (on the left) served as wingbacks. The midfielder trio consisted of Joey Barton, Jordon Mutch and Alejandro Faurlín, while Charlie Austin and fresh from his transfer sagas, Loïc Rémy, played up front. Brian Murphy, Clint Hill, Matt Phillips, Nedum Onuoha, Karl Henry, Junior Hoilett and Bobby Zamora sat on the bench. Ferdinand took the captain's armband. As for Hull, they utilised a similar formation and did not field any former QPR players.

QPR lost the match one-nil, after a goal from a corner scored by James Chester. QPR had the majority of the play, and could have equalised six minutes from time from the penalty spot. A harsh penalty for handball was awarded against Chester, but Charlie Austin's shot was saved by McGregor.

Ferdinand, Caulker and Mutch all made their QPR débuts in the match.
